Description
The Florin Japanese American Citizens League oral histories chronicle the story of Japanese Americans in the once thriving community of Florin, Sacramento from 1869 through post World War II. The oral histories focus on immigration and settlement, the World War II internment period, redress and reparations. This is a transcript of the audio recording digitized in 2016 by the California Audiovisual Preservation Project. Allan M. Hida, Nisei male, was born 01/16/1929 in Sacramento, California to Hide (sister of Shizuko Ito and Mitsuko Hironaka) and Howard Hida. Allan's social contacts as a youth and adult were primarily Caucasian. In 1942 when he was 13, the family was sent to Walerga, California, Tule Lake, California and Amache, Colorado. His father's friend, Burton Neville, oversaw the Hida home: collected rent, paid taxes and mortgages — the house was saved. Allan described camp conditions in detail. The Hida family resettled in Milwaukee, WI in 1944. Allan served in the USMC from 1951-1954. After discharging from the military, Allan became became a teacher and married a Caucasian, Vivian Jones. He was active in Japanese American Citizens League redress movement. Allan Hida passed away in Carmichael CA, December 7, 2020. The Appendix includes copies of wartime newspaper items about evacuation and internment.
