Description

This book documents the activities of the Sierra Club's first annual Base Camp outing. Held from July 28-August 10, 1940 at East Lake in the eastern High Sierra region of California, this trip provided an opportunity for Sierra Club members to more leisurely explore and enjoy the 'out-of-the-way beauty' of the Sierra Nevada. As the first ever Base Camp trip, the Base Camp Book, 1940 documents the experiences of trip participants, such as exploring new and unmapped lakes, streams, and peaks; studying and collecting flora and fauna specimens later donated to the California Academy of Sciences; reporting on bird and other animal life in the region; studying and photographing previously unmapped glaciers; and participating in peak climbing trips. The book contains original contributions from trip participants, and in addition to scientific and technical data, also includes poetry, camp fire stories, and personal recollections. Additionally, the book contains a map of the East Lake region and an unidentified photograph.
