Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview Mark Reno was an Assistant Bridge Engineer in Sacramento, CA for Caltrans. On the day after the earthquake, Reno came into work early, met with his supervisor and they went to the Cypress Structure along with two UC San Diego Professors who wanted to see the damage. The professors took photographs some movies of what they saw, and when the professors saw enough, Reno was asked to retrieve some asbuilts from Sacramento. Reno did this and stopped at his house to retrieve one change of clothes, came back to Cypress Structure and spent one week at the Cypress Structure. Some of the highlights of this interview are assisting first responders recover victims, assisting the California Highway Patrol in collecting Vehicle Identification Numbers from the damaged vehicles, and assisted in retrieving the US Mail from a mail truck that was damaged. He was also there when Buck Helms was rescued and describes how his experience working at the Cypress Structure changed him afterwards.
