Documents the founding of the Zoological Society of San Diego and the San Diego Zoo's early growth and development in San Diego's Balboa Park.The San Diego Zoological Garden is unique among zoos in that it exhibis nearly all animal outdoors the year around. Admission costs 75 cents for adults, but children up to 16 years and all San Diego City and County high school students with a valid I.D. card are admitted free. The guide includes the Children's Zoo, reptiles, mammals, and birds sections, as well as a section entitled History, Services and Membership. This section includes the zoo's dedication to children, insight to the Biological Research Insitute and the Zoological Hospital, the unique setting at the zoo, the Zoo school, publication and membership, as well as information on how to give bequests to the zoo. Trained animal acts are presented in the Wegeforth Bowl, named for the Zoo's founder, every day throughout the year without charge. This edition includes a fold-out map attached to the back cover by the Art Service Studio, as well as the Sketch Map of the San Diego Zoological Garden. In fold-out map, migratory birds are included, as well as a much more detailed rendering of the Children's Zoo. Children's Zoo: macaw exhibit, owl, dog and cat duplex, spider monkey cage, lion, desert tortoise, ape family, seals and sea lions, antelope ground squirrel, Speed the giant tortoise. Reptiles: red diamond rattler, gaboon viper, king cobra, emerald tree boas, Sonoran gopher snake, Cuban iguana, American alligator, Dudley Duplex the two-headed king snake. Mammals: Masai lions, Virginia opossums, Tasmanian devil, koala, hairy-nosed wombat, gray kangaroo, slow loris, night monkey, proboscis monkey, Barbary macaque, Celebes macaque, Allen's monkey, drill, colobus monkey, Sumatran orangutan, lowland gorilla, giant anteater, two-toed sloth, African crested porcupine, capybara, North American wolf, Cape hunting dogs, Montague Island brown bear, polar bears, sloth bears, lesser pandas, wolverine, striped hyena, tiger, jaguar, Northern fur seal, Northern elephant seal, rock hyrax, Malay tapir ("saddle-backed" tapir), Sally and Barney the African black rhinoceroses, African warthog, Nile hippopotamus, dromedary camel, guanaco, wapiti, Uganda giraffes, okapi, bighorn ram, sable antelope, klipspringer, gerenuk. Birds: North African ostrich, Aru double-wattled cassowary, Belle the Mantell's kiwi, penguins, flightless cormorant, black-necked jabiru stork, American or West Indian flamingos, American egret, horned screamer, whooper swan, coscoroba swan, cereopsis goose, emperor goose, secretary bird, bald eagle, short-tailed bateleur eagle, Mongolian ringneck phesant, Indian blue peafowl, masked bobwhite, vulturine guineafowl, ocellated turkeys, Florida sandhill crane, white-winged trumpeter, Brazilian black-necked stilt, silver gull, great crowned pigeon, Leadbeater cockatoo, thick-billed parrot, Cuban trogon, Lesson's motmot, concave-casqued hornbill, apricot cock of the rock, banded aracari, bare-throated bell bird, white-backed piping crow, red bird of paradise, Myer's sickle-bill bird of paradise, Princess Stephanie's bird of paradise, Himalayan white-crested jay thrush, Philippine coleto.
