Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Gus Wojke was a Maintenance Superintendent for Caltrans based out of the San Leandro Maintenance Station when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred. In this interview Gus describes his initial response to the earthquake and then the work of the maintenance department to close off earthquake damaged Route 80. He also discusses the typical damage highways and bridges suffered and how Route 80 was repaired.
