Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. Tony Vasquez was a Caltrans Equipment Operator based at the Santa Maria Maintenance Yard when the Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred. In this interview Mr. Vasquez retells his experience as a member of a maintenance team in District 5 assisting with the emergency roadwork on Route 152, specifically Hecker Pass. The pass was affected by rockslides caused by the earthquake and the heavy rains that followed. He also discusses the perils faced by Maintenance workers on highway routes.
