Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the interview, Jim McCrank was the Branch Chief of Traffic Operations Systems for Caltrans District 4 in San Francisco. In this recording he describes his personal Loma Prieta earthquake experience at home in Daly City and what improvements to traffic flow around the Bay Area that his staff could implement. McCrank worked at the Command Center that was set up at the Caltrans Oak Street office in San Francisco and worked closely with Maintenance or Construction to get the approved lane closures implemented. Mc Crank would also work with the Public Information Office so that the public could get timely updates on the traffic lane closures. He also reflects upon how this experience affected him personally.
