Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of the interview, Eduardo Edesan was a Toll Collector with Caltrans at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Toll Plaza. When the Loma Prieta Earthquake happened he was working at the Toll Plaza collecting tolls. He felt it shake so strong that it made him dizzy. After the shaking stopped, he learned from an intercom notice that the bridge was closed and part of the bridge collapsed. Edesan assisted with stopping traffic and to tell drivers to turn around. He then assisted the toll sergeant to collect all the cash bags and have them deposited properly. Later, the building electrician told people to evacuate because there was a gas leak and the basement was flooded.
