Oral History of John Awdry Armstrong
1978-02-27
John Awdry Armstrong was the son of John Samuel Armstrong, founder of Armstrong Nurseries. J. Awdry, as he was known, was born in Ontario, California on January 24, 1899 and was the only son of John S. and Charlotte Armstrong to survive to adulthood. He attended local schools and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1922. He returned to Ontario to join the family business immediately after graduation. After Armstrong Nurseries incorporated, J. Awdry was named Executive Vice President, then later President, and eventually became Chairman of the Board. In his interview, J. Awdry discusses his early life and family, the founding of Armstrong Nurseries by his father, and important aspects of Armstrong Nurseries including its location, rose breeding, and rose patents. A guide to a separate collection of materials related to Armstrong Nurseries can be found here: http://www.oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/kt9s2042mx/
