John Spear
1991-12-11
John Spear arrived in Whittier to work in 1946, but spent time here from 1926, as his uncle and grandmother lived here. He began working at a Post Office in Pennsylvania in 1936. He volunteered for the Navy, and spent a year and a half at Pearl Harbor, working in the post office there. He served as Assistant Superintendent of Mails at the Whittier Post Office, retiring in 1972. He discusses the change of street numbering system in Whittier, in 1966, from three-digit addresses with directionals to five-digit addresses without directionals, for the purpose of consistency with the Los Angeles County numbering system.
