Description
Ada (Arnett) Essley's mother came to Whittier in the 1860's. Mrs. Essley was born in Whittier in 1896. She grew up on a ranch in what was considered "the country" in the area of what is now Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital. Dee Essley arrived in Whittier with his family in 1902. Dee Essley discusses the Whittier State School (later Fred C. Nelles, closed 2004) in great detail, as well as a pool hall and cigar shop in early Whittier called the Lark's Nest. He also discusses a Chinese vegetable vendor, grocery stores, cemeteries, and movie theatres, painting a vivid and detailed picture of early Whittier.
