Description
Front image of postcard depicts the Tavern of Mt. Tamalpais with the railroad tracks running up through the arch of the tavern. Printed on the front of the postcard is the following text: "5964. Tavern of Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Tamalpais, California (Elevation 2592 feet). On the Road to a Thousand Wonders." The back of the postcard contains a handwritten message addressed to a Miss Miriam of Paso Robles, California. The Tavern of Tamalpais was a combination hotel and restaurant which opened in 1896, and was sometimes referred to as Summit Tavern or Tamalpais Tavern. The Tavern burned to the ground in a 1923 fire, but was rebuilt and reopened in 1924. The Tavern continued to operate until 1950, when it was razed by the Marin Municipal Water District.
