Oral History Interview with Allan Hida

Nisei male, born January 16, 1919 in Sacramento, California to Hide, sister of Shizuko and Mitsuko. His social contacts as a youth and adult were primarily Caucasian. In 1942 when he was thirteen, the family was sent to Walerga, California, Tule Lake, California and Amache, Colorado. His father�s friend, Burton Neville, oversaw the Hida home: collected rent, paid taxes and mortgages and the house was saved. Allan describes camp conditions in detail. The Hidas went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1944 and his permanent residence continues to be in Wisconsin. He was discharged from the U.S. Marines in 1954 and became a teacher and married a Caucasian, Vivian Jones. He was active in the Japanese American Citizens League�s redress movement. The appendix in the bound copy includes copies of wartime newspaper items about evacuation and internment.
