Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast.
Segment 1 (silent): Picketers at De Anza College construction site, with signs reading "Picket Barnhart-Dillingham Constr. Co. does not have current agreement with Building & Construction Trades Council." Site is among orchards along a busy road. Broadcast script reads, "Pickets appeared at the construction site of the De Anza College in Cupertino today. This was no student demonstration, however. The pickets represented the Building Trades Council for Santa Clara and San Benito Counties. They are protesting the reported failure of the Barnhart-Dillingham Construction Company to sign a contract with the Council. Building Trades Executive Secretary Roger Brennen said the Council and the company first met in early December. At that time, the company was under no construction labor pact. Brennen said the Building Trades Council offered the company a labor agreement. Meanwhile, the company joined the Association of General Contractors, and said the AGC agreement covers the company. Pickets were posted. Brennen says the Trades Council wants that protection of the overall contract for everyone on the job. The AGC contract coves only a third of the workers. A spokesman for De Anza College says the picket lines will not delay construction on the new campus."
Segment 2 (silent): Firefighters at a residential fire. Script reads, "A San Jose residence built in 1875 was gutted by fire early this afternoon. Seven units of the San Jose Fire Department answered the 2 pm alarm at 289 Bassett, which is in a predominantly industrial area. Firemen fought the blaze for about 30 minutes before bringing it under control. The house was owned by 87-year old Miss Mary 'Meme' Tallon, who has lived in the house since the day she was born. The only things Miss Tallon could salvage from the fire were the clothes she wore and her purse. Fire investigators attribute the blaze to an overheated wood stove in the living room of the small four-room dwelling."
Segment 3 (silent): Santa Clara County Supervisors demonstrate ballot marking devices at meeting. According to broadcast script, "The County Board of Supervisors found time for some diversion in their regular Monday morning agenda...The diversion was supplied by County Registrar of Voters Pat Sullivan. He brought a sample ballot to be used in San Jose's bond election a week from tomorrow. Voting will be done by a self-contained marking device which carries its own ink supply. The marker punches black dots in the squares opposite the voter's choice. The ballots are collected after the polls close, and will be taken to a central location where they will be machine counted..."
