Notes on reel: "I (b) A Man Named Smith ___ + the Oakland Police (c) 1960-05-09 11:30 'Dr. Martin Luther King' receives Local 1199 of the Drug and Hospital Union's annual Brotherhood Fund contribution to the NAACP. Dr. King speaks of his plans for the immediate future. Recorded March 10 in New York (WBAI) (d) 11:15 'Power and Powerlessness in America': A speech by Hulbert James, Director of the NCC Committee on Domestic Hunger, in which he analyzes the issues around poverty, the struggle in which Dr. King gave his life. Mr. James documents the alienation and repression of the present social order and its value system of inhumanity. ('Martin Luther King Speaks') [Yuen note: To a group of mainly white youth - NSA meeting in St. Paul, Mn.; $30000000 a year studying poor people. Reference to [Alinasky] at end - $3,000 per lecture.] I. (e) 11:15 'The Drum Major Instinct': A sermon delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. to the congregation at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The subject is leadership. Dr. King take his theme from the words of Jesus, 'So shall it be among you, whosoever will be great among you shall be your servant.' ('Martin Luther King Speaks'). II. (a) Martin Luther King, April 16, 1967 sermon, 'Why I Oppose the War in VN', 'This is Revolutionary Time' [Yuen note: Excellent - 45 mins. (c) 11:15 'Interruptions': A sermon delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr. at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, Georgia. ('Martin Luther King Speaks') (d) 1968-05-09 1:00 'An Interview with Huey P. Newton': Reporters from the national and international news media talk with Mr. Newton, leader of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, about his personal and political philosophy. Recorded March 7 in a a detention cell at the Alameda County Courthouse, the program was produced and narrated by Colin Edwards. King tells why he has to speak out against the VN War. (c) 1970-09-11 2:30 'Thou Fool': Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached this sermon at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago on August 27, 1967. 'Any religion that professes to be concerned about the souls of men and is not concerned about the slums that cripple the souls, the economic conditions that stagnate the soul, and the city governments that may damn the soul is a dry, dead do-nothing religion...'
