Claremont Community Dr. Hal led a panel of speakers to discuss the history of the United Church of Christ. The panel included Dr. John Ray, Stanley Larson, Carolyn Lyons, and Albert Norton. John Ray gave a brief history of the United Church of Christ in Claremont. UCC is the oldest church in Claremont and is closely connected to the Claremont Colleges. Stanley Larson was a member of UCC for over 60 years. He describes the current church building, Guildhall, as “not only the religious center, but the social center of the community.” He discusses the history of planning and building the Guildhall structure, and he explains the various meetings that have been held in the building throughout its history. Many community organizations, including Rotary and Kiwanis, have held meetings at UCC. In fact, when Temple Beth Israel built a new temple, they held their worship services at UCC as well. Carolyn Lyons spoke about the history of the relationship between UCC and the Claremont Colleges. She was a member of UCC in 1941. She explains, “It was out of the Pilgrim Church in Pomona that Pomona College came, and it is out of Pomona College that the Claremont Church came.” She added, “There was a general acceptance of the fact that the church and the college and community were one.” Albert Norton discussed the various buildings that they church used throughout its history. The first worship services were held in the dining room of Sumner Hall. Later, the worship services were held in Holmes Hall, and in 1927 they began worshiping in Guildhall. He then gives a detailed description of the planning and building of the current church building located next to the Guildhall. Millard Sheets designed the windows on the South side of the chapel, and the altar, lectern, and pulpit were all designed by local artists.
