Description
William Haas was born in Bavaria and immigrated to San Francisco in the 1860s. He worked in the wholesale grocery business. In addition to being a well-known philanthropist, Haas held posts as a director of Wells Fargo, as president of Mt. Zion hospital, and on the Board of arbitration of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. Haas married Bertha Greenebaum in 1880 and had three children: Charles, Alice, and Florine. The Lilienthal family, like the Haas family, was of German-Jewish descent. In the 18th century they had become fiscal agents for the Bavarian court and were recognized leaders of the Jewish community. The family immigrated to the US in 1840. Ernest Reuben Lilienthal, a contemporary of William Haas, was born August 30, 1850, in Lockport, New York. In the summer of 1871, Ernest arrived in San Francisco and opened an office at 223 California Street as a wholesaler of Cyrus Noble whiskey. This was the beginning of Lilienthal and Company, which was the largest wholesale liquor firm in the west up until 1890. In 1909, Ernest Lilienthal married Alice Haas, the third child of William and Berthe Haas. Collection consists of home movies taken between 1927 and 1987 by various descendants of the Haas/Lilienthal family. Collection includes films in various formats chronicling family trips in the US and abroad, and documenting various family events.
