Description
San Francisco Jews of Eastern European Origin, 1880-1940 was an oral history project conducted from 1976 to 1978 by the Western Jewish History Center and the American Jewish Congress. Its goal was to provide information about the experiences of Eastern European Jewish immigrants to the U.S. and about their interaction with other groups in the context of the times. The project emphasized the south of Market Street district in San Francisco, where many of the immigrants first settled, and the city's Fillmore-McAllister and San Bruno Avenue districts, where many immigrants from Eastern Europe moved after the destruction of their homes and institutions following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Among the themes explored were: religious, social, and cultural values
women's roles
the impact of the immigrants on existing institutions and the formation of new organizations that were created to meet the immigrants' new needs
labor history
and political ideologies.
