Carey McWilliams discussed the failure of the 1972 presidential candidates - George McGovern and Richard Nixon - to discuss the issues of the day
specifically the Vietnam War and race relations. He stated that black and white race relations had improved since World War II because of better informed public opinion and recognition that the issue was national in scope and not merely regional. McWilliams stated that Mexican-Americans demonstrated their political power in the 1972 presidential election, especially in Texas. This was due to an increase in the national consciousness of Chicano culture and its influence on American culture. McWilliams then discussed how the magazine industry was at risk, particularly for magazines with a small circulation. The decline in small magazines correlated to the decrease in news stands. More magazines were being sold at supermarkets, which were less interested in the smaller magazines with a political bent. McWilliams concluded the speech with the hope that society did not become dependent on television and radio for political and intellectual news.
