Description
Ivey was born in Flagstaff and spent the first several years of her life in the Grand Canyon, where her father worked for the National Park Service. Several aunts and uncles worked in fire towers nearby. The family moved to Manzanar when she was eight, in search of work for her dad. He was familiar with the area because he had worked in the Saline Valley mines. He helped demolish Manzanar War Relocation Center. Ivey recalls gardens still lush and growing, particularly at the hospital. She also recalled the auditorium, especially the high school basketball games she attended there. Ivey’s family remained in the area, moving into Independence eventually, and her dad worked for the Division of Highways. From Independence, Ivey observed the decay of the trees and plants at Manzanar. She also witnessed the establishment of Manzanar National Historic Site, and believes that much of the opposition to the site’s establishment came from a few, very vocal, individuals.
