Sugar Pine Special: logging and saw mills

On September 21, 1931, less than two months before the Sugar Pine Lumber Company shut down its big mill for the last time, a huge order was unexpectedly received from an eastern distributor. The $140,000 sale came at a time when business generally was suffering in the wake of the stock market crash of October, 1929, and SPL officials did their best to publicize their good fortune. As the 108-car train, the largest single trainload of sugar pine lumber ever shipped from California, left for Pinedale Junction, local bands played the funeral march and pseudo-vigilantes guarded a doomed dummy labeled 'Old Man Gloom' as it was hung and burned. City officials, Chamber of Commerce directors, and other local dignitaries were in attendance for the momentous occasion. -- from Rails to the Minarets by Hank Johnston. Film footage also includes the Yosemite Sugar Pine Lumber Company line, which was organized in 1934 and abandoned in 1942 in Merced Falls, Mariposa County.
