Description

Film documents the 9 day, 4000 mile round-trip of the State University of Iowa's student musicians to Pasadena, California and the site of the 70th annual Rose Bowl (January 1, 1959), for which they departed December 27. Transportation was specially provided by AT&SF for the 135 member marching band and the Scottish Highlanders, a 75 member groups of "co-eds" who play bagpipes and dance. Stops were made at Kansas City and Albuquerque where performances by both groups were given. At Pasadena, an informal performance was given upon arrival at the station before the students unpacked for their staty at Occidental College. Prior to the date of the Rose Bowl, the bands performed at several locations in Los Angeles, including the Ambassador Hotel, the Moulin Rouge, and Television City. Clips of the Rose Parade--several floats, as well as performances by the bands--are featured on the morning of the Rose Bowl. The marching band gave pre-game and half-time performances, with a salute to AT&SF, who had made their trip possible. The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated California 38 to 12. Highlights of the football game are included. The bands visited Disneyland the following day where they again performed in a parade. Various Disneyland attractions are featured, along with the Santa Fe & Disneyland Railroad, which encompasses the park. On the journey back, they stopped at the Grand Canyon and were treated to a traditional Native American dance.
