Oral History Interview with Penny Kastanis

Penny Kastanis was born in Sacramento on February 7, 1936. Her mother, Katina Kassivis, was born in 1906 in the town of Aivali in Turkey. She immigrated to the United States in 1922 and settled in Sacramento. Her father, Giorgios Antonopoulos, immigrated to the United States in 1915 from a town called Psari in the Messenia area of Greece. Once settled, he worked on the railroad in Roseville. After he got his high school diploma from Mission High School in San Francisco he opened a business selling goods in Lincoln, California. Giorgios and Katina were married in 1925. The raised Penny in Roseville and Sacramento. They settled in Sacramento for the proximity to the church. Penny was a performer and sang in a variety of shows. She majored in music at Sacramento State. She taught in schools for a period of time and ultimately became a librarian.
