The toastmaster was Colonel Allen Griffen and speakers were Joseph R. Knowland and Earl Warren. Subject matter includes the history of California's first newspaper, The Californian, which was published by Walter Colton and Robert Semple on August 15, 1846. Also, the continuing importance of newspapers and freedom of speech as the state of California grows and prospers.
