Description
Al Serrato (Santa Ana City Councilman, 1979 - 1983) recalls a meeting with another council member regarding Mexicans who were attending church services.
Transcript
One day we had a quiet moment, me and this other City Councilman. And he was on the, I think it's called the Catholic Diocese Board at the Catholic Church. And he said to me with his fingers folded like this, he says, ‚You know Al, I know you think you're going to do well trying to develop equity, you know, amongst the Hispanics. Make them on par, you know, with the white community, but not everyone agrees with you. As a matter of fact, at our Catholic Diocese Board, we're contemplating closing the church down and constructing it somewhere else because we feel that there's too many Hispanics that are coming to our masses on Sunday.‚ I looked at him and I said - I didn't say anything, I was just so shocked. How could a person who's - especially at that level of church - you'd think, you know, the Lord, Jesus, everyone being given an equal loaf of bread, whatever; and talking about shutting down the church because there's too many Mexicans coming to our church? God, I couldn't believe it.
