Transcript
DID THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY KNOW YOU AT THIS TIME? The Hispanic community did not know me at this time because I was not involved with the Hispanic community, so two prominent members of the Hispanic community: Manuel Esqueda who was an activist for fifteen, twenty, thirty years through the League of United Latin American Citizens also known as LULAC... I think my dad was a member of, and another man whose name was Hector Godinez who was very active in LULAC as well. Hector was the Post Master of the Santa Ana Post Office and he later became, I believe, Regional Director for the Southwestern states so he was a very powerful person in the postal business. Anyway, they asked me to lunch and they're saying, ‚We don't know you. We don't know anything about you. You lived in Santa Ana and yet we've never heard of you. Where did you come from?‚ ‚Well, I was born in Orange and I was educated in Orange.‚ ‚You were educated in Orange? I know a lot of people in Orange. I still don't know you.‚ I says, ‚Well, actually I was raised in El Modina.‚ ‚El Modina? We know a lot of people in El Modina. We don't know who you are.‚ And so I said to him, ‚Well, maybe you don't know me, but you might know maybe my father or my uncle.‚ ‚Well, who's your father and your uncle?‚ ‚Well, my father is Natividad Serrato and my uncle is Sal Serrato.‚ And they looked at each other and they burst out laughing and slapping their hands on their legs. ‚Oh my god, do you belong to that family? Of course, we all know Sal and we know Nati.‚ Because Sal Serrato used to have this band in Orange County and everyone used to go to - Sal Serrato and his Orchestra - and everybody used to go to his band. He was famous in Santa Ana and also my dad used to play the maracas in the thing. And my uncle also played on the baseball team so everybody knew him, they knew of him, they knew his character. He was an okay guy, so knowing that I came from that family, I instantly became acceptable.
