We're hiring! Outreach Coordinator

In partnership with over 350 libraries, archives and museums (and growing), California Revealed helps public libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and other heritage groups digitize, preserve, and provide online access to materials documenting the state’s history, art, and cultures. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections, including technical advice and guidance, for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs.  

We gather the best archival practices for digitization and digital preservation, establish low-cost, practical standards, then manage digitization, online access, and digital preservation activities on behalf of partner organizations. Free public access is provided for teaching, study, and enjoyment. In addition, records are shared with Calisphere, WorldCat, the Digital Public Library of America, and the Home Movie Registry. California Revealed is grant-funded by the California State Library. Program operations are located at the California State Library in Sacramento.  

We have an open Outreach Coordinator position available with a contract that will run through June 30, 2023, with the opportunity for renewal, dependent upon available funding. This is structured as an onsite position, with remote work possible, as needed. Two weeks of travel will be required. The team follows the California Department of Public Health Guidelines when onsite.   

This position is open until filled and begins immediately. The first review of applications will begin August 26, 2022. 

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

The Outreach Coordinator will coordinate partner education and training, including the development, administration, and support of California Memory Labs. The Outreach Coordinator will also play a leading role in California Revealed’s outreach initiatives with an emphasis on expanding educational outreach. The Outreach Coordinator will work directly with partner organizations, librarians, funders, and user groups and will report to the Director.  

The Outreach Coordinator will help support the following activities:   

  • Promotes use of California Revealed collections, providing “better access to shared history and experiences for communities” (see State Library’s 5-Year Plan).  

  • Develops initiatives and fosters partnerships to promote educational access to California Revealed collections, including the new Education Fellowship program. 

  • Develops and delivers workshop trainings to support collection care and participation in the program. Plans annual California Memory Lab trainings.  

  • Maintains training documentation and curriculum. 

  • Serves as the primary point of contact and mentor for California Memory Lab sites, advising sites’ training and selection of tools needed to create and troubleshoot digitization stations, and providing support for digitization set up, workflows, digital preservation practices, and planning of public classes and workshops. 

  • Leads the Outreach Committee. Reaches out to new partner organizations, regularly posts to California Revealed's social media, contributes to seasonal newsletter, and other outreach projects.  

  • Edits outreach and publicity materials, website copy, and metadata to promote the California Revealed program and collections for potential partner organizations, funders, and users.   

  • Develops and implements improvements to “Themes” feature of California Revealed website, including more user-friendly structure and display, to enhance discoverability of California Revealed collections and to implement findings of California Revealed UX Study. 

  • Participates on the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Evaluation Committee and helps to implement goals of the California Revealed EDI Evaluation. 

  • Represents California Revealed at professional conferences and meetings. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Required  Capabilities and Experience

  • Master’s degree and/or equivalent education or experience.    

  • Working knowledge of library and archives preservation principles, including digitization and metadata standards for long-term preservation and access.    

  • One year digital preservation and digitization experience. 

  • Familiarity with analog audiovisual formats and digital file formats and strong grasp of audiovisual and digital preservation standards and best practices. 

  • Experience with audiovisual hardware and software for analog-to-digital conversion and preservation. 

  • Project management experience or training. 

  • Outreach and education experience, especially leading trainings. 

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications in Microsoft and Mac environments.  

  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently, in an environment where consultation, flexibility and cooperation are essential. 

  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot technical problems, isolate causes and implement solutions. Patience for training and support. 

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. 

  • Interest in California history. 

 

Compensation 

$37-40/hour, depending on skills and experience. 32-40 hrs/week. Annual independent contract (1099), with subsequent contracts dependent upon available funding. This position is open until filled and begins immediately.
