Date Created
Circa October 1875
Description
Letter from Lucy Shinn to daughter Milicent Shinn about Milicent's class of students, Annie's health, and Wellesley College opening. Milicent had some troublesome boys in her class. Lucy hopes Milicent will find a teaching position closer to home. Annie's health is still not good, coughing more with the damp weather. Uncle Dennis sent the family an article about Wellesley College, which opened that year. Also mentioned the Women's Congress meeting in Syracuse in October 1875.
Item Annotation(s)
Dear Millie, [Fall, 1875]
I have waited day after day about writing to you thinking every evening that we should have a letter from you to answer, but it has not come yet and I will wait no longer. I am hoping that when we hear we shall hear that you are in new and better quarters. Papa seemed on the whole rather elated over your tussle with the boys, telling Wash about it and winding up with the opinion that they would find they had to do as they were told. On the whole I think it quite a good thing that that boy is out of the school, and trust you will have no more serious trouble. I don't want you however to lay your plans for staying up there longer than Christmas. I believe I was very foolish to let you go so far away, and I am longing so to have you back that I do not see how I can stand it. I think too it would be better for Annie to have you here. She talks to you and you keep her stirred up some, which is much better for her. She sticks to her books and sits over them most of the time and indeed it is not at all the thing for her. I confess to feeling a great deal of anxiety about her. She has coughed more since the damp weather. Do not make any promise to stay longer than till Christmas. Laura Lynch has given up her school and I made inquiry about it with the idea of getting it for you if it was desirable but Laura said there was no good boarding place and it was $10 per month less than you are getting and if we wanted you to come home would have to send, so did not appear inviting.
I suppose you saw in the Bulletin that Prof. Sill was sick. Annie thought she should hear more about it from the girls but she has not yet. I find I am getting very fond of the Prof. and have felt much troubled to hear of his sickness.
I shall send soon a package of plants to Mrs. Collins, R.B. You asked me if I would like some Acorns. I would but when I consulted Papa he pronounced them not worth the postage, so I said nothing. We have had a visit from Eddie, he is more like himself than when up before. Told Josie he thought he was mistaken in some things when up here before, has a tremendous appetite and if he takes exercise to correspond it will do I guess. Rec. paper with account of Wellesley College from Uncle Dennis. I suppose shall send to you. The Womens Congress met in Syracuse [Oct. 1875] Aunt Annie was so much interested that she had subscribed for the Womans Journal for 3 months and will send it to us. Do you want to see it? Take good care of yourself my child. My heart is bound up in my children and I do not know how to bear to have them sick.
Yours, Mama.
