Description
Nisei female, born in 1920 in Berkeley, CA. As a Yoshi, Grace�s father took her mother�s family name. Grace, as eldest child, was given her father�s new name but her younger siblings were given his original name. In the 1930s the family moved to Southern California where her parents were Japanese language teachers. Enrolled at Univerity of California, Berkeley in 1938, Grace missed graduation in June 1942 when she was twenty-two years old. Both parents were detained by the FBI, but mother was released to join four daughters at the Santa Anita Racetrack Assembly Center. They then went to Jerome, Arkansas where father joined them in 1944. Grace taught music at the camp school at $19 a month while her Caucasian counterparts earned $300. As a teacher, Grace worked in Japan and the Richmond School district. She is married and has two daughters and grandchildren.
