First oral Interview (of 3 interviews) with photographer Phillip Hyde (1921-2006) conducted August 7, 2001 by Donald R. Anderson. Photographer Albert C. Weber (1930-2016) also present for interview and makes comments from time to time. Discussion centers on Hyde's: biography and early inspiration
early European travels with his family
education at a polytechnic high school and how this prepared him for the future
service in US Army Air Corps during WWII.

Hyde gives his response to a John Szarkowski critique of Ansel Adams' work and goes on to discuss his own early darkroom experiences and attendance at the first class at the California School of Fine Arts, Photography Department, under Ansel Adams with additional instruction by Minor White and Edmond Weston.
