Philo Jacoby, athlete and marksman, arrived in San Francisco in 1859 on the clipper ship Whirlwind. Jacoby established one of the longest-lived Jewish newspapers of San Francisco, The Hebrew, in December 1863. The Hebrew was published for 70 years until 1923.
