Description
Michael T. Benning was a Sacramento commercial photographer who documented social life from the Sacramento region to Western Nevada, including Lake Tahoe, from the 1920s to the 1970s. He began his career taking school portraits in the Sacramento area and later expanded to photographing classes, social clubs, events, street scenes, and structures throughout Sacramento and areas east in California and Nevada. He lived in Sacramento during the fall, winter and spring, and lived in Kings Beach on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe to photograph there during the summers. The images in his collection provide thorough documentation of the people of these areas over the course of several decades, giving us a glimpse into the demographics, people, fashions, and activities. The entire collection consists of around 20,000 images, and those digitized include our most at-risk photographs covering schools, sports, churches, and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
