The Asian & Pacific Islander Student Union (APSU) was a statewide network of student organizations formed in the 1970s in response to the Regents of the University of California vs. Bakke decision that weakened affirmative action programs in the United States and ultimately paved the way for California to ban such programs altogether in 1996. In addition to their political activism, APSU organized and participated in a number of events to increase awareness and celebration of different Asian Pacific American cultures. One such event, hosted by the Asian Student Union at the University of California, Berkeley, was a screening of the landmark Visual Communications film, ���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������Hito Hata: Raise the Banner��������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������� in November 1981. This film, directed by VC founders Robert Nakamura and Duane Kubo, was the first-ever full length Asian American film when it premiered in 1980. In this photograph, a student addresses the audience before the screening.
