Sanford Ballou was born in Ontario, California on October 14, 1903. His father, Benton Ballou, was a prominent rancher with a significant ranch in the Cucamonga area, growing primarily grapes and stone fruits. Sanford Ballou attended local schools and later went on to the University of Southern California. After returning from college, Ballou worked in the ranching business with his father, and later was the owner of the Benton Ballou Company, which developed a superior peach pitting machine that preserved the flesh of stone fruits when pitted. Among the topics in this interview, which was recorded on two separate days in 1978, Mr. Ballou describes his father’s ranching endeavors, his recollections of Ontario and its people, and his tenure as a board member of the Ontario City Library.
