Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast.
Segment 1 (silent): California Highway Patrol officer inspects a Volkswagen Bug after checking the driver's license. Shots of wipers, steering wheel, lights, tires, and driver's foot on the pedal. Close-up of officer's CHP badge and car.
Segment 2 (sound): Reporter Rik Whitaker stands on a highway overpass to explain the CHP's new role in automobile safety. Script reads, "One out of every four California motorists is driving a car with safety defects...defects of which the driver is not aware. These statistics were reported to a special meeting of the statewide traffic safety committee in Los Angeles. The figures came to light after the highway patrol began a new inspection drive on May 1st. Channel 11's Rik Whitaker has this special report. California motorists who violate the speed limits on the state's busy freeways may find more than a traffic ticket being written out for them if they are stopped by the highway patrol. Since May 1st, the patrol has been taking extra time with speeders, safety checking their autos from stem to stern. A check for a valid license is the first step. From there, the officer starts with the horn, then goes on to check windshield wipers, the steering system, brakes, signal lights, tires, and the general condition of the car. The state legislature has directed the patrol to place added emphasis on vehicle maintenance, which is the reason for the inspection. If the inspecting officer finds a safety hazard, he writes a no cost ticket...no cost except that the motorist must correct the safety hazard. The safety check is not intended as a substitute for the motorist's own plan of maintenance, but is intended as a try to reduce the tragic California death toll. This is Rik Whitaker reporting..."
Segment 3 (sound): Interview with Assemblyman William Stanton, who says that the University of California needs to be kept out of the political campaign or it will destroy the school. Story reads, "Assemblyman William Stanton of San Jose and State Public Utilities Commissioner William Bennett have announced the formation of a committee for the defense of the University of California. The action follows last week's report of the State Senate fact-finding subcommittee of Un-American Activities...contending that the University's Berkeley campus has become a refuge for communism and sexual misbehavior. Channel 11's Bob Marsden talked with Stanton about the formation of his committee..."
Segment 4 (silent): Woman in suit being greeted by a small group, speaking at a microphone, and inside Leininger Community Center with women in traditional kimonos. Script reads, "The wife of the governor, Mrs. Bernice Layne Brown, spent the day today visiting here in Santa Clara County. She addressed a morning gathering at the Sunnyvale Co-op...met with news media representatives at noon here in San Jose and visited the Overfelt High School compensatory education classes early this afternoon. The final stop in the county for the state's first lady was a public tea at the [Leininger] Community Center building in Kelley Park. She was greeted upon her arrival by City Councilman Louis Solari and six city officials. Mrs. Brown gave an informal talk to some 50 persons gathered for the event in the community center's Octagon Room. In keeping with the Japanese flavor of the center, kimono-clad girls served the tea....while another traditionally dressed girl strummed the koto. A review of an Oriental art display and a visit to the Japanese Friendship Garden were also included on the program."
Segment 5 (silent): Baseball game. Script reads, "The Santa Clara Broncos closed out their home season at Buck Shaw Stadium this afternoon by defeating the University of California 8 to 3...Dick Bolestri's 5th inning home run added to the Bronco total, but the big blow was left fielder Joe Carlon's grand slam home run in the 3rd...Cal ace Andy Messersmith absorbed the loss, as he was hit hard by the Broncos.. Sophomore lefthander Bob Walton was the pitching and hitting star of the game, as he limited the Bears to 6 hits, and went 3 for 3 at the plate...the Broncos close out their season tomorrow afternoon at Berkeley against the Bears. Game time is set for 2 o'clock."
