Description
Lillian Johnson, the creator of this scrapbook, was a dwarf, pituitary type, who formed a chapter of Little People of America with her husband in Sacramento, California. She could be described as a proportional dwarf, as her body and extremities were proportional like the general population, but she was short. Her adult height was 4 feet, 4 inches. She was born in Texas in 1929, where she obtained a high school education, but was not able to find employment. She left Texas when she was 21 and joined a circus. While working in the circus, she met her future husband and together they had a show business career for several years. During World War II, her husband began working at Lockheed Aircraft in Long Beach, California. After the war, they worked as custodians on a large cattle ranch near Bakersfield. In her daily life, she shopped for the family and cooked meals, while her husband took care of maintenance and repair. They moved to Sacramento where her husband went to work as a Jet Engine Mechanic at McClellan Air Force Base. He later trained for Radio and TV repair and set up shop in his home. In 1957, she and her husband attended the founding meeting of Little People of America, held in Reno, Nevada in 1957. After that meeting, they formed a chapter in Sacramento and were active in LPA. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Bakersfield where she died in 1993. Sprinkled throughout the scrapbooks are news articles, featuring Lillian and her husband, that chronicle and document their travels and their volunteer work for LPA.
