Artemis Lewnes was born in Serres, Greece. She moved to Halkida at the outbreak of WWII, where she experienced the German occupation during the war firsthand. She came to the U.S. at age 12 in 1946. Her father George Theodore, after leaving Greece and working as a boy in Romania, immigrated to the U.S. in 1910 and ended up in Chicago
he opened a confectionary business with cousins, but decided to go back to Greece in 1920 and ended up in Serres after the burning of Smyrna in 1922. The family returned to the U.S. again in 1946 and settled in New York City and operated a grocery store until 1956. Artemis met her husband Jim while they were students in New York City and got married in 1958
in the interview she also discusses feelings about Greek identity.
