Part 1 of 2. Margaret Pendleton Cooper Mays, wife of artist Paul Kirkland Mays (1887-1961), and her brother Professor Lawson Pendleton Cooper interviewed on April 5, 1967 by Betty Hoag McGlynn. Topics include: family history; education in US and UK; teacher William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) and collaborator Albert Herter (1871-1950); artist friends and travels; murals and paintings done in New York, San Francisco (St. Francis Hotel), Carmel and Monterey (Casa Abrego); illustrations for an unpublished biography of Benjamin Franklin; work on the Federal Arts Project; The Jungle, painted for the White House; and works done various theaters in Hollywood, including the Paramount Theater and Grauman's Chinese Theater.
