"The Desert Whispers" mimeograph newsletters were written and published monthly by Martha Wood Coutant for the community of Johnson Valley. They are full of neighborly news about people, local events, clubs, community meetings, Search and Rescue, water in the desert, the phone district, Desert Ears C-B Club, recipes, box socials, poetry, business ads and more. Contest winner Bob Burton named "The Desert Whispers" and Mrs. H. F. Scoville named a column "The Horned Toad." At one point there were over 200 subscribers.
