Description
This California Centennial Commission Landmark No. 270 marker cites the founding and location of the town of Kingston, located 1.2 miles southwest of Laton, CA, on the Kings River. The town was founded by L. A. Whitmore who operated the first Kings River ferry crossing. After 1858, the town became a stopping place for the Butterfield Stage. A toll bridge took the place of the ferry in 1873. On December 24, 1878, Tiburicio Vasquez and his bandit gang made a bold raid on the town, robbing the entire village.
