The film follows two Whittier-area youths throughout the course of a single day, as they prepare for a date at a dance. The boy and girl each discover how distributive occupations play an important role in their daily lives, and come to understand that such work is important. Of historical interest is footage of local businesses and neighborhoods in the Whittier area. Also of interest may be some of the jobs shown in the film made obsolete by technology and changes in society. Its creator, Norman B. Eisen, was well-known throughout the state for this and another short film digitized by the CAVPP titled "Work Experience Education". Together, these two films provide a window into what it was like to enter the workforce as a high school graduate in California, in the early 1960s.
Information on the creator of the film was found in a March 10, 1965 newspaper article in Redlands Daily Facts, quoted here: Norman B. Eisen, director of work experience for the Whittier Union High school District, will be the featured speaker for the Redlands High School Career Opportunities night to be held next Tuesday evening, March 16, it was announced today. With the "World of Work" as the major theme for this program, Mr. Eisen brings a wealth of experience in vocational fields for this gathering of RHS students and parents. He has served in his present capacity in Whittier for 13 years, having received his education at U.C.L.A. and U.S.C., where he is presently a doctoral candidate. In addition to his educational background, Mr. Eisen is State President, California Association of Work Experience Educators, has served as instructor in business education in high schools in Redlands and Whittier, visiting instructor in education at Long Beach State, and former president, California Association of Distributive Educators. This prominent educator was cited as "Young Man of the Year" in Whittier in 1962, and the Whittier Community Service Award in 1962. In addition to numerous memberships in professional organizations, Mr. Eisen has been the author of several articles appearing in State Department of Education publications and the Journal of Secondary Education. He has become very well known throughout the state of California with the preparation of two, 30-minute color sound films entitled, "Work Experience Education," and "Career Opportunities in Distributive Occupations".
