Recording of KPO/NBC broadcast of California Newspaper Publishers Association program at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Monterey, California on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the publication of California's first newspaper., Additional Descriptive Notes: Governor Earl Warren address before California Newspaper Publisher's Association as part of the California Centennials celebrations. The toastmaster was Colonel Allen Griffen and speakers were Joseph R. Knowland and Earl Warren. Subject matter includes the history of California's first newspaper, The Californian, which was published by Walter Colton and Robert Semple on August 15, 1846. Also, the continuing importance of newspapers and freedom of speech as the state of California grows and prospers.
