Julie Mamalis was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942. Her mother was born in Dallas, Texas in 1919 to immigrant Greek parents. Her father was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1917, also to immigrant Greek parents. They met in Michigan during the war years. Julie's maternal grandparents came from the island of Chios. Julies paternal grandparents come from Crete or Samos. Julie's family immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. They settled in Sacramento in 1945. Julie's father worked as a truck driver. Julie grew up and married right after high school. She moved to Germany briefly before returning to Sacramento.
