Description

Jake Dekema began working with the Division of Highways in 1938. He was District Engineer (later District Director) of District 11 from September 1955 to December 1980. During this period, he administered the planning, developing, and construction of 485 miles of the California Freeway and Expressway System in San Diego, Imperial, and east Riverside Counties with a minimum of public controversy. On February 20, 1982, the 29-mile stretch of Interstate 805 was officially named the Jacob Dekema Freeway.
