The California State Library collection contains text and still images spanning from the late 1700s through the modern era. The majority of the collection consists of photos of residents through the ages and includes subjects and topics such as Japanese Americans, Armenian Americans, Bill Clinton, William Saroyan and more.

The University of Southern California, USC Libraries, Special Collections online collection contains audiovisual material (moving images and audio) from the 1940s to present day. The recordings in this collection include videos from the USC Thornton School of Music records which document lectures by notable composers such as Henry Mancini and Andre Previn, as well as video and audio which document and comment on the brutal beating of Rodney King in Los Angeles and its effect on race relations in that era.
